breaded escalope

Launched in London in 2007, the Vienna-based art and design collective breadedEscalope — Sascha Mikel, Martin Schnabl and Michael Tatschl—deal with spatial structures and subject-object relations. Analyzing and questioning daily routine are constant factors in the group’s practice, and keeping everyday life in check is the point of departure for objects, installations and performances that bridge the applied and visual arts. Works by breadedEscalope are in the collections of MAK, the Hofmobiliendepot (Imperial Furniture Collection) and the Vienna Museum, and they have received the Outstanding Artist Award for their project “love me bender”.

The object appears to be a ring of ambient light on the wall – until the observer interacts with it: If one touches the wall in the center of the ring, the clock will dim all the LEDs but two spots which illuminate the index finger and make it cast two shadows which resemble the hands of a clock. Thereby the user becomes the most important component of the concept. Your own shadow tells you time.

Shadowplay was first presented to the public during the 2015 edition of Vienna Design Week. The 2017 edition presented with Frederieke Taylor Gallery comprised of three unique objects made from exclusive materials, brass, wood and terrazzo-stone, and were exhibited during the 2017 Collective Design Fair in New York.

The “Original Stools” objects are produced in a unique process with a solid hollow orb which houses a flexible silicone mold in which resin is filled. Then the orb is set in motion by simply rolling it through the streets, down a slope, into white water etc. Since the orb is moving in all directions, the resin coats the entire inner surface of the form whilst hardening. The flexible form “records” all influences from outside therefore, the shape of the outcome varies.

Every single object is unique. Cities like London, New York, Berlin, Milan, Paris or Vienna got their dedicated “Original Stools”, made by the people & streets of the area.
